Interpreter/Assistant for U.S. Judge in Gori and Khashuri

The USAID Rule of Law Program, implemented by the East-West Management Institute (EWMI) with funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is pleased to announce a request for proposals for assisting a U.S. judge with interpretation from Georgian into English and from English into Georgian, as well as other matters, during their mentoring/shadowing of Georgian judges.

U.S. judge will come to Georgia for three to four months. The judge will be based in Gori District Court starting in approximately March 2024. 

Services requested

An individual will be selected to assist a U.S. judge in the Gori and Khashuri District Courts. The assignment will also cover Kaspi and Kareli Magistrate courts. The selected candidate will provide interpretation for his/her U.S. judge not only during court hearings but also during meetings, discussions and all related events accompanying the mentoring. The selected candidate may also be requested to provide other assistance to the U.S. judge. Working hours for the position will be set from four (minimum) to seven (maximum) hours per workday.

The functions of an assistant/interpreter for a U.S. judge will be as follows; provide interpretation at court hearings in the Gori and Khashuri District Courts, (including magistrate courts of neighboring towns: Kaspi and Kareli) depending on his/her assignment; provide interpretation for round tables as well as meetings with individual judges; appropriate referral of issues raised by the American judge to the Georgian colleagues and, conversely, timely referral of issues raised by Georgian judges to the American judge: provision of timely and complete information to the American judge regarding Georgian law and court practice; and other relevant assistance related to various issues concerning the implementation of the mentoring assignment by the U.S. judge.

Essential requirements:

Education:

  1. University degree or student certificate in law.
  2. Demonstrated proficiency in English language.

Work Experience:

  1. Experience interpreting from Georgian into English and from English into Georgian will be an advantage.  

In order to apply potential candidates must present:

  1. Cover letter with a salary proposal based on the number of hours of work mentioned above;
  2. CV;
  3. Proof of English language qualification, such as IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic, and Cambridge FCE & CAE.

Note: if you have taken a full year of high school in the U.S.A. or another English-speaking country or completed at least one full year of full-time higher education taught in English at an accredited educational institution, you may be exempt from the proof of English language qualification requirement.
